Lucky escape
A car driven by a woman was crushed into the roadside barrier fence by huge rocks and a slip which closed SH2, the Napier-Wairoa Rd, just south of Devil's Elbow, after steady rain turned trickling mountain streams into torrents.

Maurice Cockerill, better known as Snow Cockerill, winner of All Blacks Tickets and Breakfast at McLean Park, a Hawke's Bay Today and Hawke's Bay Rugby Union competition. Snow was an All Black in the 1951 tour of Australia. He got to bring 9 of his mates from Summerset in the Orchard, Hastings. He is pictured with the Ranfurly Shield.
